You’re going about it all wrong. “We tend to think that if we work harder we’ll be more successful, and then we’ll be happy as a result,” says psychologist Shawn Achor, author of The Happiness Advantage. “But it turns out that formula is scientifically backwards.”
According to Achor and other ‘positive psychologists’, it’s time to break out the smiles. They claim that increasing productivity at work is directly linked to happiness and positivity – and they’ve got the research to back it up. One study in the journal Social Indicators Research found that the more chipper the employee, the more likely they were to receive positive appraisals and promotions over the following 18 months. “Every business outcome improves when the brain is positive,” says Achor.
